Quotes of the Week

A perfect body is not required to achieve a divine destiny. In fact, some of the sweetest spirits are housed in frail frames. Great spiritual strength is often developed by those with physical challenges--precisely because they are challenged. Such individuals are entitled to all the blessings that God has in store for His faithful and obedient children.

--Russell M. Nelson

Your temple recommend reflects a deep, spiritual intent that you are striving to live the laws of the Lord and love what He loves: humility, meekness, steadfastness, charity, courage, compassion, forgiveness, and obedience.

--Ronald A. Rasband

There may be times when you find yourself struggling to see how God is working in your life--times when you feel under siege--when the trials of mortality bring you to y our knees... you too can pray for the Lord to open your eyes to see things you would not normally see.

Quotes of the Week

On occasion, I have met with good Saints who have had trouble forgiving themselves, who have innocently but incorrectly placed limits on the Savior's redemptive powers. Unwittingly, they have converted an infinite Atonement to a finite one that somehow falls short of their particular sin or weakness. But it is an infinite Atonement because it encompasses and circumscribes every sin and weakness, as well as every abuse or pain caused by others.

--Tad R. Callister

As we come to trust God, sometimes through pleading in our darkest, loneliest, most uncertain moments, we learn He knows us better and loves us more than we know or love ourselves.

--Gerrit W. Gong

The reason charity never fails and the reason charity is greater than even the most significant acts of goodness... is that charity, 'the pure love of Christ' is not an act but a condition or state of being. ...Charity is something one becomes.

Quotes of the Week

The nearer we get to our heavenly Father, the more are we disposed to look with compassion on perishing souls--we feel that we want to take them upon our shoulders and cast their sins behind our back. If you would have God have mercy on your, have mercy on one another.

--Joseph Smith

I bear my witness that this is God's work and he will continue to do many unimaginable things among His children, His people. God holds us in the palm of His caring and compassionate hands.

--Dieter F. Uchtdorf

No other success can compensate for failure in the home.

--David O. McKay

Thanks to His "immediate goodness," the instant we come unto Christ--demonstrating faith in Him and a true change of heart--the crushing weight of our sins start to shift from our backs to His.

--Matthew S. Holland

Missionary Companions Now Sisters-in-law; Chris Has Cancer; More and More Family Covid Cases

When Natalie arrived back in town from visiting her family in Omaha for the holidays, we picked her up at the airport, took her to our house to feed her, and then drove her down to Provo where we dropped her off at her apartment, which was absolutely freeeeeezing!!! BRRRRR!!

Thankfully the only thing needed was new batteries for the thermostat.

Glen chose to forfeit attending a BYU basketball game so we could attend the wedding reception of one of our missionaries, Abby Ericksen.

Her mission companion, Sabrina Thomas, lined her up with her brother Neal, and now the two former companions are sisters-in-law. So fun!!
Another interesting missionary fact is Sabrina (in green dress below) took into her family as a sister another one of our missionaries, Catherine Niesporek (in red dress). Sabrina's whole family has embraced Catherine with so much hospitality and love.

And yet another missionary tie to Sabrina is that she married one of our missionaries, Jared Hickman (second on the left). So this little missionary group of Abby, Jared, Sabrina, and Catherine will be forever bound together through friendship and marriage. So cool!!!
I received this shocking news from my friend Chris. I noticed she and her husband Mark have moved from Providence (near Logan) to Preston, Idaho. We had hooked up with those two right before we left on our mission and haven't had any contact with Chris since.

It made me so happy to see she had sent a holiday update this year and then when I read what has been going on with her, I was heartsick to learn she has been going through breast cancer, has had surgery and will be receiving ongoing treatments.

I am anxious to talk to her and hear more about it and get caught up on other things that have been happening in their lives.
When Glen learned that one of his former peers and his wife have been called as mission leaders, they made plans for all of us to get together and talk about that and provide an opportunity for them to ask us questions. I sure know we had lots of questions when we were first called and had no idea what to expect.
Nadmid Namgur and Mayumi Namgur have been called to preside over the Mongolia Mission. WOW!!! That sounds daunting.

The good news is Nadmid is from Mongolia. Mayumi is Japanese, but they have already spent 4 years living in Mongolia, so it won't be a total shocker to them to live there once again.
They were telling us that their mission area is the size of 3 states of Texas. WHAT??!!?? That is an insane amount of land mass for them to oversee. It is the world's most sparsely populated country (according to Google).

When I asked about the temperature there, Nadmid said what people say is it is cold for a while in the summer months and the rest of the year is colder (-5 to -22 degrees, not counting the wind chill factor).

Once again we were giving thanks for our call to the California Carlsbad Mission where our mission boundary was so compact and the temperature was pretty temperate all year round.

They are a cute, young couple and will be taking their two sons with them. I just know their missionaries will love them. It was fun to get to know Nadmid and Mayumi that day.
There was more eating out for us that week. We usually go down to Provo early on a game day to have a pre-game meal so we can beat traffic.

This particular game day, the start time was 8:00 p.m. That is sooooooo late!! We decided we would eat at Chili's in Centerville early and then drive down to the game later.

We invited the Goldens to join us. Rebecca got Dallas a to-go meal since he was working that day. Look at the strategic seating arrangement with Glen on one end of the table and Brooke on the other end.

That turned out to be very advantageous (we hope) (fingers crossed) (and double crossed) after we heard the dreaded news about Brooke the next morning.
Rebecca shared this news with the family Sunday morning.

SERIOUSLY??!!?? Brooke was in the sick house for weeks as every other member of her family kept getting Covid and she never got it. NOW she has it???? What in the world??!!??

Since Glen did not get sick when I had Covid, we are hoping his booster pulls through for us, and we hope Brooke was far enough away from him that he won't get it.

Brooke isn't the only one sick with the dreaded pandemic illness. Jacob informed us of his family members who are now sick with Covid.

Luke sure gave me a chuckle over his reactions to the Covid-in-the-family news, and then later his own reveal. It would be interesting to know how many of them were actually sick with Covid.

Well we know one family who is not sick. Abe's family is back at Disneyworld getting their money's worth out of their season passes.

Ben and Haley are in Las Vegas doing a little gaming with Jeff and Sarah while Ben is there on a work trip. This is a heart-warming sight to see our children getting together and enjoying each other's company.
This is Jan Evans's birth month. Today is her actual birthday and we went to lunch to celebrate.
But never fear--there is more celebrating in honor of her before this month is over. Happy birthday, dear Jan, happy birthday to you!!! ( And many more...!!!)

Quotes of the Week

Come and feast on the words of Christ. The word is not "nibble," it is not "pick at," it is not "tentatively sample." It is "feast" --"feast" as in feel deeply nourished as you savor every bite. Not tentatively but wholeheartedly.

--Gerrit W. Gong

In a way, we are seeds. And for seeds to reach their potential, they must be buried before they can sprout. It is my witness that though at times we may feel buried by the trials of life or surrounded by emotional darkness, the love of God and the blessings of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ will bring something unimaginable to spring forth.

--Dieter F. Uchtdorf

We are invited, one and all, to bring our faith and talents and knowledge--all that is good in our lives and our individual cultures--with us and let the Church "add to it" through the message of the gospel.

Sarah's Family Here the Week After Christmas

It was good news when we heard Jeff's eye appointment went well. That meant the Excell family could get on the road singing, "Over the river and through the woods to grandmother's house we go."

Well, I'm pretty sure they weren't singing. At least not singing that song. But one thing is for certain--grandmother was excited to see the four boys and their parents.

Everyone was hungry, so we had a late pizza dinner when they arrived. Then it was off to bed for all.

The next day the boys were very excited for their cousins to arrive.
Ben and Haley were anxious to play games while the children were happily playing together.
Of course four boys living in Las Vegas would be eager to get outside playing in the snow.

The Excells and the Goldens went ice skating.

See that beautiful pink coat Madison is wearing? It now no longer exists--at least not in her possession. It was left behind at the skating rink and when Rebecca went back the next day to get it, the coat was nowhere to be found.

Lincoln was so cold after ice skating and was looking forward to a warm grandma snuggle when he got home.
The rest of the time Sarah's family was here, we basically did the same few activities over and over again: eat (which included several French toast breakfasts), play with cousins, play games, and put puzzles together.

All this was happening with nonstop, televised football games on in the background.

Madison just loves to wear the big, red glasses. They used to be sunglasses, but she took out the dark lenses so she can see better.

Unfortunately, one of the hinges broke, so she only has one side holding up the glasses and they fall off easily, but she continues to find and wear them whenever she is here.

One day, we decided to have a girls' meal out (after we fed the children a macaroni lunch). The guys ate take-out. They were going to have Smokin' Bones, but that restaurant was closed. They opted for Texas Roadhouse steaks instead.

We girls went to Olive Garden "for old time's sake" as Sarah said. That has always been a favorite for the girls, but not so much a favorite for the boys.

I cannot believe I did not take a photo at Olive Garden to commemorate our walk down memory lane.

Nani had sent us home with the leftover ice cream punch ingredients from the Christmas Eve party so our family could enjoy that bedtime snack and we sure did. Carson especially loved the drink.

Usually the grandchildren were in the basement playing, but one night I found all of them upstairs in our bedroom watching a movie together.

I just loved watching Lincoln and Jonah playing together in their make-believe world. They got all outfitted with their weapons and accessories and then really got into their characters. So cute!! Notice the phone rubber banded to his arm.
I thought for sure Jonah was going to insist on sleeping with his sword in the back of his shirt.
We were so thankful the weather cooperated for Sarah's family to arrive and then to be able to leave when they were scheduled to go back home.
It's always nice when we have these little mini family reunions whenever someone comes to town.
