We had the best date night this past weekend. We went to a concert.
First up: Scotty McCreery!!!
We loved him on American Idol and we loved him in person.
Next performers were The Band Perry. We knew nothing about them, but have since learned they are siblings with the last name of Perry.
Then it was time for the man we'd been waiting to see:
Brad Paisley!!!!
He started the concert with his song "Camouflage."
We heard it for the first time right after Glen had surgery. We were laughing so hard at the lyrics. Glen was holding his stomach in pain. It's not a good thing to laugh that hard right after surgery...
His fiddling and guitar playing were phenomenal. What a talented performer.
He would flick his guitar pick out into the audience at the end of each song. At the end of this particular song, he gave away his guitar to a lucky fan.
Brad put on a spectacular show. There were lots of graphics and lights and special things going on while he was singing.
At one point in the show, he walked down off stage and moved through the floor crowd to get to a small round stage located at the other end of the arena where he performed a few songs. That was perfect for us as we were down on that end and had a straight ahead shot at him then.
He said he used to attend concerts when he was young and he would always be up right in the rafters at the opposite end of where the performance was happening and he was doing it for his fans who were sitting up there where he used to sit.
Toward the end of the concert, a guest singer appeared on stage and the crowd went wild. It was Carrie Underwood!! Who doesn't love her??
They sang a duet together and the more I watched and the more I thought about it, I just knew he wouldn't bring such a huge star out that late in the concert to sing only one song.
I got looking a little closer and figured out it was a hologram of Carrie. She sure looked real and he acted like she was real and I'm sure there are some people who left that night thinking they had seen her in person.
Brad Paisley puts on a very entertaining concert. We were so glad we had gone.
I learned he is going to change the tour name from "Camobunga" to "The Virtual Reality World Tour 2012."
All I have to say to that is CAMOBUNGA!!!!!

"Life has got a habit of not standing hitched. You got to ride it like you find it. You got to change with it. If a day goes by that don't change some of your old notions for new ones, that is just about like trying to milk a dead cow."

"Patience can't be acquired overnight. It is just like building up a muscle. Every day you need to work on it."

Illness Strikes--Two Get Sick and the Surgery Patient Continues To Heal
Illness hit and pictures were not taken during the high fever day. Then Natalie and I were up all night with the sick kids who were crying and moaning and with the other kid who was waking up and needing help the couple of times when the sick ones were actually sleeping. It was a very looooong night for everyone.
I could have bopped the recovering surgery patient when he emerged from the basement all freshly showered and declared he'd been up since 4 a.m., when he couldn't sleep, and had already gotten a lot of work done.
Even though I was happy to see he'd showered and shaved (something he'd been doing every other day or so since he'd had surgery), Natalie and I wished he had heard the commotion going on up on the second level of the house and had offered to at least have Emma move to the couch and moan down there to remove at least one person that was keeping Natalie awake all night long.
Emma and Logan's fevers were gone the second sick day, but they still weren't totally back to their normal selves. Logan climbed on a chair and crawled into the high chair by himself acting really hungry, but most of the foods he'd been enjoying didn't really appeal to him that day.
Emma hadn't eaten anything on fever day, so she was anxious to eat a grilled cheese sandwich with Luke.
Midway through the day, Logan all of a sudden quit whining "Mommy" nonstop at me. I noticed he'd become more happy and he started playing really good by himself once again. Look how cute he is playing with the pans.
He was busy and happy and I was glad to see he was on the road to recovery...except for the red, polka-dotted rash he had developed all around his mouth and on his hands.
Natalie had been such a big helper the whole time we were there and especially during the night trying to minister to all the kids and help them be happy.
A thoughtful thing she did was when she heard Luke come into my bedroom at 5:40 a.m., she followed him in there and said very matter-of-factly that he was not going to wake Grandma up that early (too late--I was already awake).
She explained to him it was still the middle of the night and she took him back out with her and when the alarm woke me up at 7:30 a.m. (unheard of to not be awakened by one of the kids way before then), I found all the children sound asleep.
She had gotten Luke to go back to sleep and we all got a little bit of sleep. Hurrah!! Natalie was my hero!!
I felt she deserved a special thank you--a treat at YoZone when I picked her up from school. It was a fun time we had together--just the two of us.
When we were on our way together, she breathed a big sigh of relief and said it was so nice to have a break from the little kids because it's a lot of work helping to take care of them. I breathed my own sigh of relief and told her I felt the same way!!!
We got a few things from the grocery store and I let her pick out a movie to watch when we got back home because it was early-out day and we had a couple of hours left before dinner.
Glen had gotten himself all set up in the basement with his two computers, his calculator and his phone to be able to work from there. He used Laurie's craft table and it worked out great for him. He would come upstairs to help out with the kids when needed.
It was nice to not have to take the little kids with me every time I needed to make a run to the school or to the store. It was especially helpful to not have to take them out on the two days when the wind was howling and the temperature never got above freezing.
It was wonderful to have Glen eat dinner with us each evening and he was super at practicing spelling words with Natalie and Emma.
The kids loved reading books with him at bedtime.
Jacob and Laurie had a weather-related flight cancellation after their cruise when they were trying to get home from Ft. Lauderdale. They scrambled to get another flight home and ended up spending the night in St. Louis and getting home a day later than planned. It's a good thing we had planned to spend a little time with Jacob and Laurie so we were still there to watch their children.
Glen came up that morning to fix a hot breakfast for everyone before the kids went to school.
What a difference a week makes!!!
Not only was the guy cooking, but he was willing to go to the school for lunch with the girls.
It was a relief for Jacob and Laurie to finally get home after all the airport delays. Laurie decided to call the doctor once she saw Logan's spotty face, hands and ankles. The doctor's office confirmed her suspicion of him having hand, foot and mouth disease. Emma was getting the spots on her hands as well. She was told the kids are only contagious when they have a fever and they had been fever-free for a while by then.
So off to Red Robin we went for dinner that evening.
It was a big day at the Thomas house. Not only did the parents finally get back home, but it was also the day the Girl Scout cookies were ready for the girls to start selling.
Logan tested the Thin Mints and found them to be delicious. Natalie got on the phone and called Rebecca, Sarah and Benjamin to see if they wanted to buy some cookies and we could personally deliver the cookies to them.
Our last morning in Omaha began with a French toast breakfast cooked by Jacob.
We got our last hugs and kisses with the kids and posed for a picture.
It had been nice to spend time with that family and those grandchildren that we seldom get to see. Jacob and Laurie appreciated their cruise vacation by themselves. Glen was feeling so much better from his surgery. It was definitely a blessing that we were able to fly there and back rather than do our usual driving.
Things just worked out wonderfully well.

Taking Care of Kids and a Recovering Surgery Patient
When the call came asking me to watch four grandchildren while their parents went on a cruise, I begged Glen to go with me. He finally consented. Jacob bought the airline tickets. Our trip was set.
Then came the gall bladder surgery, right before the trip. The cruise ship couldn't wait for Glen to get better, so off we flew, to Omaha, a mere 5 days after surgery. My patient was scaring me at the airport when he had to sit down every couple of minutes as we made our way from the screening area to the gate.
Thankfully, we had our nice neighbors, Roger and Kathy Jacketta, drop us off right at the terminal door and Jacob was ready and waiting to pick us up on the Nebraska end of the flight.
We got to Jacob's house very late and stayed up even later talking to Jacob and Laurie to get the scoop on what we needed to do to care for the children and keep them happy while their parents were gone.
Jacob and Laurie got a couple of hours of sleep before having to get up to catch their flight to Florida. We had a short night's sleep in the basement with Glen all propped up with the couch cushions since he wasn't feeling comfortable lying flat in bed yet. I heard someone awake far too early that morning which meant the babysitting had begun.
Any worries I had about the kids waking up to find us in the house and them not liking it were unfounded. The three older kids definitely know us, but I was worried about Logan being afraid of us and wanting his parents. He didn't even bat an eye when he saw us and went on with life as usual.
I quickly learned the routine of these two little boys. Logan loves to color every morning and Luke loves to eat at least two and sometimes three different kinds of cereal. But you must wash out the bowl in between cereals. No mixing of the milk with the change of cereal.
We got such a kick out of Logan calling us Mommy and Daddy all week long. He definitely knew we were Grandma and Grandpa, but his vocabulary is somewhat limited and we didn't mind. As soon as his parents returned back home, he quickly reverted back to calling them Mommy and Daddy.
Natalie begged us to go to the school to have lunch with her and Emma. Glen wasn't feeling up to that outing the first day, so I took Luke and Logan with me. They always like going to the school. Actually, Logan likes to go anywhere that takes him outside the house.
I got a picture of Natalie, but didn't get one of Emma. They are in the lunchroom at different times.
It was a real treat whenever Natalie sat down at the piano and played some songs.
Emma came home all smiles from school. She was carrying a pig in a small cage. It is their class pet and it rotates each weekend to the home of one of the students. How happy we were to know Mr. Snuggles got picked to live at Emma's home the weekend we were there.
Emma wanted to show us how she plays the violin. Looks like Glen is snuggling with Mr. Snuggles.
The kids watched a movie that night. Mr. Snuggles watched it with them.
Next morning Mr. Snuggles was hungry and Emma did a good job feeding him.
This was the sight I saw when I got done showering. As you can see, there is an adult "supervising" the children while I was gone. Logan was the culprit who dumped the cereal all over and the rest of the kids jumped in to enjoy playing in the mess.
After helping to clean up the cereal spill, the kids and Mr. Snuggles got all ready to go on an outing to the grocery store.
Many pictures were snapped of Emma and the pet pig because she needed photos to put on a poster and to glue into a book where the students tell of what they did while they had Mr. Snuggles.
After finishing her poster, the reward was popcorn and a movie!
The weekend was over and it was time to say good-bye to Mr. Snuggles when Emma put him in his carrier and hauled him back to school. So long, and good riddance.
The kids and I enjoyed the nice winter weather for a few days before it turned bitterly cold. We waited outside for Luke's ride to pick him up for preschool. The snowman on the porch is so cute, but I think the little boys are much cuter.
Stay tuned for the second part of the babysitting-in-Omaha story...
